ADVANCE THEATRE: NEW WORKS BY WOMEN
According to a national study, in the Canadian theatre industry women account for 33% of the artistic directors, 34% of the working directors, and 27% of the produced playwrights. Recent surveys indicate that production rates for women playwrights are regressing rather than improving over time, resulting in a trickledown effect that is negatively impacting on the sector as a whole.
As a response to the underrepresentation of women in theatre, the Advance Theatre series will showcase dramatic readings of five new plays by Canadian women playwrights over five days during the Vancouver Fringe Festival, kicking off in September of 2015.
If you are chosen to participate in the Advance Theatre series, Ruby Slippers Theatre and the Fringe will cover the costs of your technical rehearsal, promotion, theatrical venue on Granville Island, and artists’ fees for a public staged reading of your new play during the Fringe Festival!
