Ruby Slippers 2013 / 2014 Season

Ruby Slippers Theatre is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with productions of four outstanding Canadian plays: Communion at Pacific Theatre (October 25-November 9), a revival of Hotel Bethlehem at The Shadbolt  Centre for the Arts (December 4-7) and the Firehall Arts Centre (December 10-22), the English premiere of Two Years of Your Life (rEvolver Festival), and an exciting new play in development, The Great Raymond.

Over the last 15 years Diane has commissioned and produced the premieres of many English translations. This cultural exchange of the best of the contemporary Québécois canon continues. In 2013/14, Ruby Slippers is commissioning the English-language translation of Two Years of Your Life by Rébecca Désraspe, translated by Leanna Brodie, and will produce its English premiere in association with

BoucheWHACKED! Theatre Collective at rEvolver festival’s Ta Gueule Staged Reading Series – “Trois”. RST is also celebrating their 25th birthday with Daniel MacIvor’s smart, dark Communion, directed by Roy Surette at Pacific Theatre; remounting their original Christmas satire Hotel Bethlehem by Drew McCreadie with The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and The Firehall Arts Centre; and continuing development with awardwinning author Timothy Taylor on a very scandalous true story about Vancouver in its angry youth. All in all, it’s been a great quarter century. Ruby Slippers Theatre has evolved, our work has deepened, our audiences grown. And so have our responsibilities. We take a leadership role in our community in many ways.

Artistic Director Diane Brown co-founded and is President of The Catalogue of Independent Arts, a shared marketing initiative that brings profile to risk-taking artist-run organizations. Diane also heads up Theatre Cares Vancouver, an organization that raises money and awareness for people living with HIV/Aids, sits on the Professional Association of Canadian Theatre’s national Advocacy Committee, Studio 58’s Theatre Advisory Committee, and is Co-Chair of the Jessie Review Committee.
